Yesterday I started sketching as soon as I woke up and the bottom two sketches are what came out. The top two are from this morning. I started thinking about tarot cards and creatures and wanted to produce something more of an illustration than a loose doodle. Surprisingly, these drawings came out fairly easily while doodling at times can feel like absolute work. I'm very excited to ink and paint them eventually. I think when I relax and think about what I want to draw (and not think TOO hard) it results in something I'm truly happy with. These sketches surprised me, and while I'm not sure how other people think of them, I'm pretty satisfied, which is something relatively new for me when sketching. I don't think I'd commit to this one style, I don't think I'd commit to one style ever, but it is nice to know I can do things like this every once and a while. I think I'll keep it up and see where it goes!

Also, damn my scanner for making everything look so light! D:

Junk I've drawn over the past week or so. A bunch of it is D&D related since I sketch while I play with my friends. The character with her eyes bleeding is my character >__> she got poisoned and started bleeding from the eyes. Totally brutal. I really have no idea what I'm supposed to do when sketches now a days. I feel lost while trying to search for a style of my own :/ it's frustrating, if im not feeling a sketch i just stop, hence many unfinished faces or doodles.

Whew, its been a little while since I updated. But I HAVE been drawing, I assure you :O

First page is what I do while in my summer English class. Class is all over with now but I did love going. I had a tendency to just draw for the whole class. It's amazing how distracted I am at home when I have nothing to do but when I go to class and I'm supposed to be paying attention I can't tear myself away from drawing. I particularly enjoy the gross pikachu's I drew :T

Second page is a page I posted before, this time inked. I figured I'd maybe show some progress. I'm hesitant to add the grayscale marker to it because it's so permanent :X There's no redo button for them unlike my tablet. A friend of mine messaged me and told me how much he liked the weird dream like drawings I've been doing. It's giving me the motivation to do more of them and try to make them more structured or to atleast do them in some sort of organized sequence. They are fun to do and I'm glad someone appreciates them and gets the uneasy dream like feeling I was trying to show in them.

Third page is what I drew on my first day on my new job. My new job being, answering phones for my mom in our office. I have to wake up pretty early to start work at 7:30. Good thing I have tea to keep myself awake...and also my cat, Schmee, meowing at me.

Fourth page is a silly page I drew during D&D of my character and my friends characters. I play a female human barbarian who has a huge vulture named Seabreeze, for a pet. My favorite thing on the page is the little drawing of my friend Mike's character, I think his name was...Cornelius Maplethorn or something like that. He'd probably get mad if he read this and saw I got the name wrong :T He plays a halfling who has a weasel for a familiar. Her name is Lady Skittersworth and she is, like her name states, a lady.

And the fifth page is some random doodle I drew in class when I was supposed to be paying attention.

I went to the arboretum in Jamaica Plains with a friend and sketched. I'm impressed with how I drew my trees :O I saw this little peapod thing with a little flower on top of it. It made me think of a Miyazaki creature. I tried drawing a little creature that would live inside of it.

The experimentation with my gray scale markers continues. Im not as happy with this one as I was with the other two. Oh well, It's a lot of a fun, I think I'll keep doing this :) Slowly trying to make the pages to stand on their own as some sort of short story of that scene. So I'll admit the style is pretty bad haha. I wanted to try drawing something a little more realistic to try out Painter Sai. It's getting there. My first attempt, picture 1, looks alright. Still has that sort of deviant art soft airbrushed look though. I haven't stopped exploring other styles though! Trust me. The last picture is so not me anymore hahah but I have a feeling it will get a lot of hits on deviantart because people like that style and its a dude with his shirt off. Figured I'd just use it to test out painting for now. Inking these pictures has made me MUCH more comfortable with my tablet :D

Weoo! I finished it D: There are three different versions, the top one with a texture layer and filter, the second with just a filter and the bottom one just regular type. This is the first time I've tried painting in photoshop :X Many lessons were learned, namely, never use soft brushes! The final product is not what I wanted it to look like at all but its a learning process I guess haha

Added! New character to go along with my 1930's gal. I guess you could say I've decided it will be 1930's and my male character will be sent off to war. I want there to be a strong relationship between these two characters. I kind of saw both of them as mechanics or engineers, the guy who works on airplanes and the girl who works on motorcycles. I'll add more later :U

Presenting more sketches! And also my hand! Wowee! I'm working on a new sort of project with Scott and William where I do some concept drawings during a week or two and they take my ideas and form a one page comic each. I had this strong idea of a female character wearing sort of 1930's clothing and would have a vintage bike. Even though it's cut off and quite small I'm proud of my drawing of a motorcycle without any reference! The other one is ok..haha. I'm not sure if I picture her being in the 1930's or just some alternative setting with all the characteristics and style of the 30's. Something I should probably explore for the next set of drawings. All I know is she is some sort of badass and I like it and you should too.

Character Design Homework!

Done in the order I drew them in! Woo! I'm having a lot of fun with this assignment. The homework was to pick a videogame and draw three new characters for it. I chose Soul Calibur because I wanted to draw realistic looking characters with weapons. I was torn between this and making new cousins for the game Katamari but I know what I chose is more of what my professor wants. I'm not finished yet! I was just so excited with what I've done so far that I've decided to post in-progress work. I get to color a few of these in class next week.

Added: I've uploaded all of them :D For my male character I was trying to make him look like a viking but it's really hard to do without adding a beard. I can see how I strayed from the viking look. Oh well, I'm still happy with how he turned out :)

For my last sketch for concept 2 I tried draw all the characters together. I need to work hard on becoming more comfortable with drawing more than one character. I feel like It turned out pretty well. I can see a few problems with anatomy right now and it was really hard to draw Areva short and still look in proportion compared to the taller characters. Besides a few technical issues I feel like I showed their personalities pretty well. Good luck, Jess! :D

I never draw buildings :X I just learned perspective about two weeks ago. Overall I think I did ok with it. Drawing this I was really excited by how it was turning out but once I was done I realized everything is slightly tilted :/ I like style of the building at least. I looked at a bunch of houses in England while drawing this. Also, this is for me and Jess's project together. I figured one of the characters I drew before could live in this house, or something like it.

Third character! Weoo! I wanted to have this character to be exotic, I researched some Thai names and I've decided to name her Areva. It's extremely hard for me to name any character. Whenever I play a videogame and I have to create a name for my character it will take me hours to think of JUST the right name. I feel like names give a certain personality to characters and if you already have established character traits and a clear idea of the character it can be extremely hard trying to fit a name to character. Names add another flavor to characters that can either enhance their traits or clash against it. That's how I've always felt about it anyways. I've decided to call my second character James and my first character Louis. Now it will be much easier to explain. I wanted to have a character who was working for James prior to Louis agreeing to work for him. I had a lot of ideas but I was sure I wanted a female character.

Here is my second character! I have a pretty clear idea of what type of character he would be, he would be a smooth talker, very confident, he can come across as elegant and sincere but there's an underlining dodgyness and coldness to him. As far as physical appearance goes he is handsome but slightly rough looking and has a scar going up his left eyebrow. I imagine him to be something of a high class criminal and notorious for being able to get any item for any price. Although, he is a criminal I see him as being extremely intelligent and cultured. I imagine his apartment to be full of books and objects from all across the world, but it would be very small and messy and ofcourse it would have his piano. I think I would want to have this character somehow stumble across my first character by way of one of them playing. I think I would like to have this character hear my first character playing the violin and take interest in his first, his skill with the violin, and secondly his strange personality. I can see my first character being very cold and somewhat rude to this character and have no patience for this characters flashy personality. I really need to start giving names to my characters... Anyways, I can see this character, becoming interested in my first character for some reason, whether he sees him as a financial opportunity, he genuinely wants to help him out or that he's bored and its entertaining to him to have someone around him that isn't fooled by his charm. This character has friends in high places since he is paid considerable amounts of money to hunt for items for the rich. I see my first character as a noble possibly but living on his own and very poor. I think I would have this character bribe him by saying he could make him famous as a musician but he would have to work for him first. My first character is stubborn, and is very proud and would never associate himself with a criminal and one who infuriates him, but he eventually gives in. I've got a great idea for one more character and then I think I will do some buildings and sets.

I uploaded this last night but was too tired to write anything for it. So here is a new character for me and Jess's project. I've been listening to different types of music, especially soundtracks, and sketching to see how they turn out. So for this sketch I had been listening to the soundtrack for the recent Sherlock Holmes movie. I already had the idea to do this weeks concept during a specific era but listening to the soundtrack made me fall in love with the late 19th century. I'm not sure yet but I want to have the story for this concept set in somewhere gloomy, if not London then a fictional place very similar. For this character I imagine him as handsome but somewhat gaunt and gloomy looking. I'd imagine him to be very quite but when he speaks he's very quick witted. I'm still exploring what sort of role he would play in this new story. I think I will have a much better idea once I draw a few more characters and a few set ideas. Also, I realize it looks like my character is standing on a slope but it's really just because I tilted the paper too much while taking this picture haha

I've drawn more of the my new male character. He's so strange and fun to draw. I also drew a bit of what his house would look like. I imagine it being in a deep, dark part of the forest but covered in the strange flowers he grows and tends for. Maybe the girl character and boy character uncover his house by mistake while searching through the woods. I really want to see how Jess will have these three characters interact! Especially the boy and girl character with this strange flower creature.

So we have an ok drawing of my girl character and a new character! I wanted to draw a villain type character or just something strange looking. I wanted this male character to be extremely tall and willowy and also a different race than the other two characters. I'd imagine his skin tone to be a pale green with a purplish tone around his eyes. The top drawing I have him growing a strange flower. I imagine he lives in a deep part of the forest and grows strange looking flowers that only grow there. As I'm typing this I'm getting more and more ideas of sketches! I'll have to use them for tomorrows sketch. I drew him without his mask but usually he always wears it. I'm not sure why exactly. I think it makes him creepier and more mysterious.

Another concept drawing for me and Jess's project. I decided to draw the two characters interacting. I'm having an off night. I had a bunch of ideas for environments and another character but every time I tried to sketch it, it just wouldn't turn out. I decided to just draw the characters even though they look a bit different from the first sketches I did. I lost a lot of the roundness to them and I'm not sure I like this sketch. But it had to be done! Something is off with the feet D: I'm writing a sticky note to remind myself to practice drawing feet haha

Sorry for the wonky colors! I keep trying to adjust the contrast and brightness in photoshop but it doesn't seem to do much. Hopefully, you can somewhat make out this. I never do environments so this was a big change for me. I really want to get better at it and do more of this! This is basically what I envisioned for the village for my boy character for me and Jess's project together. Smallish huts, some stacked on top of each other with other housing inside rock and also in the trees. I wanted all of them to be connected and for it to feel like a close community. I also wanted the line between nature and the village to be blurred a bit. I'm proud I managed to finish an environment but now looking at this I have even more ideas of what I could do differently. I just learned perspective in my Drawing for Animation class. Next time I need to apply perspective more :O It'll be a challenge to have rounded buildings in perspective instead of the rectangular buildings we practiced drawing in class.

Concept Art Day 2!

Two more concept drawings for Jess! I drew a male character (say whaat!?) I picture him as pretty spunky and stubborn. It may be hard to tell from my style but I picture him as child or at least a young adult, maybe a little older than my first character. Now that I think about it he reminds me a lot of the character the Great Mido from Zelda Ocarina of Time if anyone remembers him. If only because they look similar. I had an idea of this character living in the forest and knowing his way around. In the first post I have a few rough ideas of the forest. I drew a sort of weird flower, I want the forest to have a more mystical look to it. It was pointed out after I drew the flower that it resembled a person so I decided to just draw a creature out if. I want to post something more solid later. Maybe I'll draw a village in the forest. The first thing that comes to mind is a village from the game Baten Kaitos.

Looking back at the first character I drew, I just can't see her as living in the forest. I picture her coming from a city outside of the forest. It may be hard to tell from my sketches but the material the two characters are wearing are very different. I picture the girl wearing pinks and orange tones made from a shiny fabric or a lightweight fabric for more flow. The boy's clothes are heavy thick cloth, something like wool and is shades of browns, greens and whites. I want the two of them to interact in the comic Jess is going to write. I was thinking maybe the girl is in the forest for some reason and the boy finds her and maybe mocks her for not knowing her way around the forest, but eventually helps her. Hope this helps, Jess! It's a little hard for me to describe the way I imagine my characters. Hopefully, the more I do this the better I will get!

Here is my first sketch for me and Jess's project. I had an idea to draw a cute round character. I imagine her costume is shades of pink and orange and her pet would be white. I'm not entirely sure what her pet is, probably some sort of dog creature. The back of her hat has a giant bell and her dress has an oversized button on it. I imagine she'd be in some sort of dreamy fantasy world. Maybe my next post will be concept art of some scenery.

Character Design work

Here are some sketches I've done for homework for my Character design class. I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures. I don't have a scanner yet so I am relying on my webcam :X I had to crop out my fingers in some of the pictures haha. But I am getting a scanner soon!

The first assignment for class was to draw three characters with three different body types. I drew the big beefy guy with the weird hair slick, the funny short chubby man, and then I used a sketch I had done earlier for my third body type (check my first post!) I had definite personality ideas for them as I drew them. I picture the big guy as sort of a brute, not very academically smart but street smart. The short man I picture as mischievous and very full of himself, maybe a kind of villain character. The girl I imagine is something very close to Major Kusanagi from the movie Ghost in the Shell, quiet, strong, but maybe with more of a short temper.

Second assignment was to to draw the three characters according to four different themes; suspense, love, action, and horror, with a focus on facial expressions. I'm feeling good about this homework, hopefully my professor feels the same way haha

Whoa! Some animation!

This is a Cut Out animation for my Stop Motion class. I'm pretty happy with it :) It's a bit choppy but for my first cut out animation I think I did pretty well especially since I didn't use an X-sheet at all for the lip synching. If I had more time I would have edited in some heavy breathing and foot steps and probably some background noise. I really wish the school had a multiplane camera to add some depth to the background :( It was really hard trying not to get my character caught on the background paper.

Old sketches!

It's about time I posted these somewhere! Here are some old sketches I did during the summer into fall. I tried to pick out the ones I liked the most. It was really hard for me to pick though especially since I only took my anatomy class this past fall and it helped me understand proportions better. I feel more confident exaggerating my figures while still understanding proportions. So...as you can see, I like drawing ladies haha. There is one male character though! It's a big improvement for me. I will try to draw more male characters! And also less anime! It's a big problem I have with my characters. I really want to stop drawing in that style and have a more original look. It's really hard for me to break the habit of drawing anime looking characters when it's just what I've been doing for the past ten years.

Not too much to say about the first three sketches. They are just some pretty sketch ideas I had during the summer. The fourth drawing, the girl with the apple, is actually a redesign of my main character from my first animation project. I would post my first animation but I am very embarrassed about it. I guess it's only natural to feel that way about a first project. The sixth drawing I did while looking at Alphonse Mucha's work. If you haven't checked him out! Go do it! I have a few more sketches I will post that are bit older but they are more concept designs for a comic idea I have.

Also beginning this week I will begin posting concept ideas and character designs for my friend Jessica (yanyu.deviantart.com, scribble-yu.blogspot.com) to turn into a one page comic! I will be doing six drawings throughout the week, one a day and then on the seventh day she will draw a comic. I'm really excited (and also a bit nervous) to start doing this! If I don't do six drawings, even if I do five, she won't do the comic! So it'll be up to me to do all six and it'll keep both of us on our toes and drawing.

Drawing for Animation work

These are a bit out of order, but this is the work I have done for my Drawing for Animation class so far! We had to start out drawing silhouettes of characters to create strong designs. I'm the happiest with my little devil child silhouette. After we had done many silhouettes we were assigned to make character sheets for them. Another assignment just assigned was to drastically redesign one of our characters. I chose to redesign my squid lady and I turned her into something cuter and much less creepy as you can tell from the last two drawings haha. The first silhouette I did was the pirate woman with the anchor. I had a tough time coming up with a strong design. I've relied on outlines too much rather than shapes. I think I've got the hang out though! Drawing shapes has at least become much easier for me and made being consistent with characters much easier as well.

Ah my very first post! I've been planning on making a sketch blog a while now. I'd say this is maybe my fifth attempt at inking and coloring in photoshop. I'm somewhat satisfied with how the colored version came out but I think I like my sketch much more.

-Added: Sorry for such a short description! Yesterday I was in such a haze because of this cold I'm fighting and very probably the cold medicine I took. I drew this character a little over a week ago on my train ride back home for the weekend. I was thinking of who I wanted to be as a comic book character. A few people told me after seeing this post on the sketchblog that it looks like me which was good to hear! It was somewhat what I was going for. I don't think I look quite as angry. While drawing this I was listening to the Pendulum's music which I am newly addicted to. If you have't heard of them check them out! Listening to them gets me really pumped up to draw especially more cyber punk sort of stuff. I wanted to draw a kind of scifi overthe top gun. I'm not sure I succeeded entirely but I'm happy with the ridiculous scope on it. While drawing this character I thought more about what character I would like to be and what kind of story and setting I'd like to be in. I added the wrench because part of me wishes I could fix cars or other machines. Maybe I just feel this way because I adore Kaylee from Firefly. I started thinking if my character was a mechanic and hired gun. I would want the setting to be in a kind of run down sleazy city yet still be futuristic and kind of cyber punk if that makes sense. Maybe a cross between Tekkonkinkreet's stylized and intricate look and the dark atmosphere of the city in the series Ergo Proxy. I've got lots to think about for this character! I'm considering trying to put her into a small comic of sorts. We'll see!
